Sombra will become a support hero in Overwatch Season 5. The rework was detailed by developers in a group interview at BlizzCon 2026.

Hero designer Scott Kennedy explained the rationale behind moving Sombra from damage to support. He stated that her previous power as a damage hero, combining invisibility, ability lock, and high damage, had proven problematic. The shift to support allows the team to preserve her core identity while removing her need to secure quick eliminations.

Core Identity Preserved

Kennedy confirmed key abilities remain. The translocator and invisibility are unchanged. Her ultimate ability, EMP, still applies an ability lock, though less frequently. The fundamental change is that she can now heal allies. "You can heal your allies while still doing the things that make Sombra great," Kennedy said. This allows players to move invisibly, interact with enemies, and support their team simultaneously.

Art director Dion Rogers expressed surprise at how well Sombra fits the support role. "Her fantasy remains intact while giving her this whole new playstyle," Rogers noted. Senior animator Kyle Disanjh added that the rework followed extensive internal playtesting with many iterations before the final version was settled upon.

The Challenge of Reworks

Lead hero producer Kenny Hudson highlighted the unique difficulty of reworking an existing hero compared to creating a new one. He joked that reworks are sometimes harder because the team must honor the hero's established identity and satisfy a dedicated player base, especially for original Overwatch heroes like Sombra.

The developers described a breakthrough moment when they realized the new design kept Sombra's essence without breaking her familiar kit. "Her identity remains intact, a lot of her abilities still make sense, we don't have to redesign EMP," Hudson stated.

Narrative Consistency

Narrative designer Eleni Rivera addressed how the rework fits Sombra's story. She confirmed Sombra's hacker fantasy is fully preserved in her abilities. Rivera explained that reworks can help the narrative team expand character arcs and develop personalities further, pointing to existing voice lines about Sigma as an example of Sombra's deeper characterization.

"We're trying to expand the story and really build these characters up, and that's something that reworks sort of help in our case," Rivera said. She believes these changes allow for character development while maintaining who the hero is at their core. The team expressed confidence in the final design, calling the reworked Sombra super fun to play.
