Discord is testing a new feature called 'Game Mode' within its desktop client. The feature automatically reduces Discord's CPU and GPU usage when it detects a game is running, aiming to free up system resources for better gaming performance.

Discord confirmed on X that the experimental Game Mode will begin rolling out to users next week. The company stated it is 'aiming to add more resource-saving features over time.' A screenshot shared by Discord Previews showed an 'Enable Game Mode' toggle with its detailed description. The feature automates settings users currently toggle manually, such as Reduced Motion, and cuts back on client-side rendering during gameplay.

How it works

Game Mode will scale back animations and disable certain visual effects when a game is detected. This builds on existing manual settings like Reduced Motion but activates them automatically based on game detection.

When Discord detects a game running, the client applies these resource-saving changes. It reverts to normal when the game is closed. The feature was first spotted by Discord Previews, an account that tracks experimental features. Game Mode could be particularly useful for players with older processors or GPUs, helping them maximize hardware performance while keeping Discord open for voice chat.

Impact and context

The feature could benefit competitive players and users with older hardware by improving FPS, especially in frame-sensitive games. Competitive titles like Counter-Strike, Dota, or Marvel Rivals may benefit most from enabling Game Mode. A dedicated Game Mode could help reduce background overhead for users who keep the client open during long gaming sessions.

Discord's background system resource usage has been criticized, especially on lower-end PCs. A common complaint among Discord users is high RAM consumption. There is no indication that Game Mode reduces RAM usage. It is unclear exactly which effects will be disabled or how much of a difference Game Mode will make to gaming performance.

Background and limitations

Discord has not officially announced the feature, and there is no release date at the time of writing. The exact performance gains remain unclear. Discord has made recent performance improvements through other means.

In late 2025, Discord addressed several memory-related issues, reducing p95 memory usage and experimenting with safeguards to prevent the app from exceeding 4GB of RAM. Discord also updated its Windows client to Electron 42, which reported a roughly 17% drop in median CPU usage. Further rendering tweaks after that update shaved off an additional few percent.

Discord is based on the Electron web app framework, which uses Chromium. Users can also disable hardware acceleration to prevent Discord from using the GPU. Discord is aiming to add more resource-saving features over time as part of its ongoing effort to reduce background overhead during gameplay.
