PGL has secured direct invitations from all 14 top-ranked Counter-Strike 2 teams for its season opener in Bucharest. The $1.4 million tournament will run from January 17 to 24, 2027, creating a scheduling conflict with BLAST Bounty Season 1.

All 14 of the highest-ranked eligible Counter-Strike 2 teams in the October 5 Valve Regional Standings have accepted invitations. The confirmed field includes Team Spirit, Team Vitality, MOUZ, G2 Esports, Team Falcons, and FURIA. The full list of invited teams is as follows:

HLTV’s report said: "all 14 teams accepted their places despite the scheduling overlap with BLAST’s opening tournament."

Tournament structure and prize details

The 16-team event will feature a Swiss group stage, playoffs, and a $1.4 million prize pool funded by base rewards and VRS bonuses.

The $1.4 million consists of a $1 million traditional prize pool and an additional $400,000 allocated through the VRS invite bonus system. The VRS invitation bonuses reward the five highest-ranked eligible teams accepting invitations, with each receiving $80,000.

The group stage will use a Swiss best-of-three format. The tournament then moves into a single-elimination playoff bracket. The Grand Final will be played as a best-of-five.

Qualification path for remaining spots

Two spots remain open and will be decided through an eight-team European closed qualifier later this month.

An eight-team European closed qualifier is scheduled for October 16-20, 2026. Six teams receive invitations to that stage through the European VRS, while two more will advance from open qualification. The two best teams from the closed qualifier will complete the participant list for the Bucharest LAN.

Schedule overlap with BLAST Bounty

PGL Bucharest 2027 runs concurrently with the second week of BLAST Bounty Season 1 in Malta, creating a direct conflict for participating teams.

The tournament will take place from January 17 to 24 at the organiser’s studio in the Romanian capital. BLAST Bounty Season 1 runs from January 11-24 in Malta. Its second week takes place at the same time as the event in Bucharest. By accepting PGL invitations, the highest-ranked organizations bypassed the BLAST event.

Implications for team circuits and organiser rivalry

The overlap intensifies competition between PGL and BLAST, affecting team incentives, reward structures, and the strategic value of attending each event.

PGL uses a compounding seasonal reward system for its CS2 Tier 1 Program. Under this program, teams compete for a $2.8 million annual viewership pool. Organizations earn points based on match viewership. These points are multiplied at the end of the year by the total number of PGL events the organization attended. Skipping the Bucharest opener permanently reduces a team’s final multiplier for the entire 2027 season.

In contrast, BLAST eliminated its season-long reward frameworks for 2027. It introduced an acceptance fee model distributing $1.8 million across the year based on Valve Regional Standings at the time of invitation. BLAST compensates teams per tournament, so missing the Malta event only forfeits the acceptance fee and prize money for that specific week. There is no compounding penalty applied to future BLAST tournaments for skipping an event.

BLAST announced earlier this year that Bounty would move away from its previous 32-team format, reducing the competition to 16 teams and eliminating the online portion of the tournament for 2027. BLAST has not yet announced its Bounty invitation list, with invitations expected to be determined using the November Valve Regional Standings. It would be premature to suggest that the 14 organisations have formally rejected invitations from BLAST, since those invitations have not yet been issued.

PGL’s confirmation of all 14 invitations gives the scheduling dispute a much clearer competitive dimension. The two remaining teams will be determined through the European closed qualifier running from October 16 to 20, 2027.
