Grand Theft Auto VI will launch with a 30 frames-per-second cap on consoles, according to a new report. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson reportedly told a YouTuber that the game is currently running at 30 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S during development.

This information comes from a report by TalkEsport, which details a conversation between Nelson and Brazilian content creator Davy Jones. Jones was among a small group invited to visit Rockstar North's studio in Edinburgh.

Performance Details from Studio Visit

During the visit, Davy Jones spoke directly with Rob Nelson, the studio's lead developer and co-director. Nelson reportedly stated that, at this stage of development, consoles are running GTA 6 at 30 frames per second. He added that the team still needs to consult with technical staff to determine if a 60 FPS performance option will be ready for launch or if it will be added later.

Nelson also said he could not yet share details on resolution or other technical features like ray tracing. The reported 30 FPS target aligns with the gameplay shown during the GTA 6 Extended Look premiere on Netflix. That roughly 27-minute segment was captured on a base PS5 and ran without visible frame drops.

Rockstar's History with Frame Rates

Rockstar Games has a precedent for launching its major open-world titles at 30 FPS before introducing higher frame rate options in updates. Grand Theft Auto V did not receive a 60 FPS mode until its next-generation upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Red Dead Redemption 2 still lacks an official 60 FPS patch on current consoles.

It remains unclear if the upcoming PS5 Pro, currently the most powerful console on the market, will run GTA 6 at 60 FPS at launch or in a future update. Nelson did not commit to any specifics regarding the Pro model during the reported conversation.

Launch Date and Platform Strategy

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not been announced and is expected to follow later, mirroring Rockstar's pattern with GTA 5. That title took close to 18 months to reach PC after its initial console release.

The discussed 30 FPS cap would apply only to the console versions at launch and would not affect any future PC release. Rockstar Games has not issued an official statement confirming or denying these performance details for GTA 6's console modes.
