Xbox Cloud Gaming will introduce monthly time limits for subscribers starting in November 2026. Microsoft announced the change on September 3 through an official Xbox Wire post, confirming that Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential tiers will each receive a distinct monthly hour allowance for cloud streaming.

Currently, eligible Game Pass subscribers can use Xbox Cloud Gaming without any monthly cap. This will change when the new system launches, after which users who exceed their included hours can purchase additional time through the Xbox Store.

The update also extends cloud gaming access to players without a Game Pass subscription, allowing them to pay for streaming access to games they already own.

Microsoft has confirmed three separate monthly hour allowances based on subscription tier, though the exact numbers were not specified in the source. These limits apply only to cloud streaming and do not affect downloading or playing games locally on a console or PC.

The company has not yet stated whether the hour count resets on a fixed calendar date or on a rolling monthly cycle tied to each subscriber’s billing date.

Microsoft cited rising operational costs as the reason for the change, stating in its Xbox Wire post that running cloud gaming becomes more expensive as usage and session lengths increase. The shift to monthly limits is intended to help sustain the service while supporting ongoing investment in reliability and performance.

Xbox expects the change to impact approximately 4% of Game Pass subscribers, indicating that most users currently stream below the new limits.

The announcement follows a turbulent period for Game Pass pricing, including a $10 monthly price increase for Game Pass Ultimate in October 2025, which reportedly led to a significant subscriber drop before some increases were later reversed.

Once a subscriber uses their monthly allowance, they can buy extra cloud gaming hours via the Xbox Store. Microsoft has not announced pricing for these additional hours.

Non-subscribers will also be able to purchase cloud gaming hours independently, enabling them to stream owned games without a monthly Game Pass plan.

Full details on pricing, eligible games, and how users can monitor their remaining hours are expected before the November 2026 rollout.

Regarding competition, Xbox Cloud Gaming currently has no hourly cap, but even after the new limits take effect, it will remain more generous than some rivals. Nvidia’s GeForce Now caps paid subscribers at 100 hours per month, which exceeds any Game Pass tier’s allowance. GeForce Now’s free tier uses one-hour session limits instead of a monthly total.

This comparison suggests Xbox’s new limits align more closely with a free-tier model than with the high-end offerings of paid cloud gaming competitors.

The new hour limits will take effect in November 2026. Until then, eligible Game Pass subscribers can continue streaming without a monthly cap. Microsoft confirmed that further details, including hour pricing and eligible games for standalone purchases, will be shared closer to the launch date.
