Funcom's open-world survival game Dune: Awakening has launched on Xbox Series X|S today, September 22, 2026. The console release arrives more than a year after the game's original PC debut and is accompanied by one of its most substantial updates yet.

The Xbox version is available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass on launch day. It also supports Xbox Play Anywhere for shared progression between Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC version.

A New Solo Experience on Arrakis

The headline change is the introduction of a full single-player mode. Players can now experience the entire game alone, a significant shift from its original persistent multiplayer structure. Three difficulty presets are available, with granular settings allowing players to adjust sandstorms, harvesting rates, XP multipliers, and other survival elements.

Funcom describes this as a single-player feature rather than a strictly offline mode. The developer states this is not a reduced version, with the full game, story, and systems available whether playing solo, on private servers, or on public servers.

Story Completion and Expanded Content

The September update completes Dune: Awakening's first major narrative arc. The Great Convention Part III introduces the final chapter of Book One, allowing players to experience the storyline from beginning to end. Existing story missions now offer additional rewards, including weapon and armour variants.

This gives new Xbox players a complete story from day one, unlike PC players who experienced it in incremental chapters. The game world has also been expanded with seven additional mission locations, six Imperial Testing Stations, and more dynamic encounters added over the past year.

PvP Becomes Optional, Endgame Reworked

Player-versus-player combat is now completely optional across the entire experience. Funcom says avoiding PvP no longer blocks access to content, mechanics, or rewards. The Landsraad endgame has been rebuilt around a mission-driven framework suitable for PvE multiplayer and single-player.

Players can progress through 20 ranks, eventually becoming either an Atreides Envoy or Harkonnen Enforcer. Late-game progression has been adjusted for smaller groups and solo players, with high-level items requiring fewer rare materials. A new Augmentation system allows modifiers to be added to unique Tier 6 gear.

Core Gameplay and Visual Updates

Combat and progression systems have received significant revisions for the Xbox launch. Changes include a larger parry window, revised enemy stamina, and improved NPC animations. A new Specializations progression system lets players invest points across crafting, gathering, exploration, combat, and sabotage to unlock various bonuses.

Quality-of-life improvements aim to reduce punishing progress loss. Bases and vehicles can now be backed up and transferred between worlds. The Xbox Series X|S version offers two performance modes:

Future Roadmap and Cross-Play

Funcom has already announced the next major update. The Polar Cap, a free expansion introducing an icy survival region with its own mechanics and storyline, is scheduled for later this year. Additional cosmetics tied to the next Dune film are also planned.

Full cross-platform play remains on the post-launch roadmap, though a specific date has not been announced. For now, the game supports Xbox Cloud Gaming and ROG Xbox Ally. The September 22 release represents a comprehensive overhaul, offering Xbox players a refined and more accessible entry point to the sands of Arrakis.
