Hearthstone's Old Gods Return in Reign of the Black Empire

Hearthstone's next expansion, Reign of the Black Empire, launches on October 20. Announced at BlizzCon 2026, it brings back the Old Gods with new power and mechanics.

Executive producer Nathan Lyons-Smith and senior design manager Brenden Sewell detailed the expansion in an interview with esports.gg. The set portrays the Old Gods at their peak power, 10,000 years in the past. Sewell explained the team aimed for a dramatic impact while expanding on familiar synergies, like N'Zoth's Deathrattle theme, to match Hearthstone's modern power level.

New Mechanics and Narrative

The expansion introduces the Assemble keyword. Sewell described its development as an attempt to push the joy of the Discover mechanic further. "We wanted to... fulfill this fantasy of merging two cards together," he said. The team worked to balance wide-open possibilities with game health, aiming for players to discover new combinations throughout the card's life in Standard.

Story content arrives via a revamped Hearthstone Journal. Its first chapter will offer linear, weekly quests involving card-based objectives like fighting Old Gods. Sewell called branching narratives with player choice "a pretty good idea" for potential future implementation.

Deck Archetypes and Class Teases

Lyons-Smith expressed excitement for the return of Yogg-Saron gameplay, promising fun balanced with ongoing meta adjustments. Sewell highlighted an unrevealed Paladin archetype interacting with the expansion's symbol, calling it his personal favorite. Official Paladin card reveals begin on September 23.

The Monk class was confirmed for a 2027 debut. Lyons-Smith was cryptic, suggesting players scrutinize the trailer for hints. A special Way of the Monk Coin is available now to those who purchase all three Reign of the Black Empire pre-purchase bundles.

New Social and Competitive Modes

A new 2v2 Tavern Brawl mode is Hearthstone's take on Battlegrounds Duos. It will be available for at least two weeks, playable solo or with a friend. It features a portal to pass cards to a teammate and new emotes for communication. The developers stated the inaugural version is for gathering player feedback on what works and what to improve.

Following the interview, a BlizzCon panel teased the Hearthstone Warchief Tavern Brawl. This preconstructed format uses 99 unique cards and a hero power to summon a Warchief. A preview showed Horde figures like Garrosh and Thrall alongside the Alliance's Jaina.
