Game world and story revealed

GTA 6 follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in a Bonnie and Clyde-style criminal story. Lucia grew up in Liberty City and dreams of a better life in Leonida, Rockstar's fictionalized version of Florida. The game is set to take players back to Vice City, a location based on Miami. Most of the fictional state of Leonida will be playable.

Rockstar developers have said the map is much larger than the playable area in their earlier games. The company hasn't given an official size, but early estimates after the gameplay reveal put the full map at roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. Vice City alone is thought to be about twice as large as Los Santos. The official website has revealed other characters including Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista, and Brian Heder. Areas set to appear include Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga.

Technical and gameplay features detailed

The game introduces several new and returning systems. The wanted system goes back up to six stars, with police reacting to your character's face, clothes, and car. The weight and muscle system from San Andreas returns, so your character's body changes with diet and exercise. Wildlife includes more than 170 animal species, such as flamingos, pelicans, alligators, and monkeys. Dynamic weather features hurricanes, tropical storms, and local rain with puddles that persist.

Rockstar says the game has over 600,000 NPC animations, a massive increase from the about 55,000 in GTA 5. Reports say the base PS5 version runs at 30 FPS on consoles. First-person view reportedly won't be available at launch. The campaign is built in chapters, and player choices can change how the story plays out. You can switch between Jason and Lucia freely, and romance between them is optional.

Marketing and development context

GTA 6 has been hit by two major leaks. In 2022, a hacker leaked early development footage. In August 2026, a leaker known as CyberLeek posted map and gameplay footage weeks before the official reveal. Take-Two responded with subpoenas to Microsoft and Discord to find the leaker, and Rockstar publicly addressed the leaks.

Despite this, Rockstar has released two numbered trailers and one long gameplay special. The first official trailer was released on December 4, 2023, and introduced Lucia, GTA 6's first female protagonist. Trailer 2 followed on May 6, 2024. The Extended Look gameplay special premiered on Netflix in August 2026 and then came to YouTube. It was the first official GTA 6 gameplay. A major advertising push is set to commence in the Summer of 2026.

During Rockstar's August 2026 gameplay special, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said his latest playthrough took about 80 hours. Preload for GTA 6 begins on November 12, 2026, allowing players to prepare for the November 19 launch.
