From Homelessness to World Champion: Monsoon's Journey to the Top of Apex Legends
Bowen 'Monsoon' Fuller, the 28-year-old Apex Legends World Champion, shares his story of overcoming homelessness and finding success in esports.

Bowen 'Monsoon' Fuller, the 28-year-old Apex Legends World Champion, has come a long way from his humble beginnings. Growing up, Monsoon and his family often found themselves without a stable home, forced to sell their belongings at flea markets to make ends meet. Despite the challenges he faced, Monsoon found solace in gaming, which became his escape from the difficulties of his life.
The one thing he kept hold of
Monsoon's love for gaming started at a young age, and he managed to keep his computer with him throughout his family's struggles. The computer, which had a soldered power supply and bits hanging off the edge, was a symbol of Monsoon's determination to pursue his passion for gaming. He would often play games at fast food restaurants, hotels, or gaming cafes, using any opportunity he had to boot up his favorite games.
Escapism as a survival mechanism
Gaming became Monsoon's escapism, a way for him to forget about the hardships of his life and immerse himself in a different world. He played a variety of games, including Overwatch, PUBG, CS, League of Legends, Paladins, and Realm Royale, and competed at a decently high level despite being a homeless kid. Monsoon's love for gaming eventually led him to Apex Legends, a game that he didn't immediately love but grew to enjoy.
Scraping by in early esports
Monsoon's early days in esports were marked by struggle, with little to no financial support. He worked at a diner to make ends meet, but his passion for gaming kept him going. He played Apex Legends for fun, but also saw it as an opportunity to make a name for himself in the esports scene. Monsoon's big break came when he signed with FlyQuest in August 2019, just six months after the launch of Apex Legends.
His first professional contract and rise to fame
Monsoon's signing with FlyQuest marked the beginning of his professional esports career. He quickly made a name for himself in the Apex Legends scene, with a notable clip of him taking out Michael 'shroud' Grzesiek, one of the most-watched FPS players, going viral. Monsoon's success in Apex Legends eventually led to him winning the World Championship with his team, Oblivion, and taking home $600,000 in prize money.
Monsoon's journey to the top of Apex Legends is a testament to his determination and passion for gaming. From being a homeless kid to becoming a world champion, Monsoon's story is an inspiration to many. He hopes that his story can show others that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible, and that a kid from nowhere can make it to the top.
