The Cyberleek campaign has been making waves in the gaming community with its release of apparent GTA 6 gameplay clips, map images, and a cutscene. The material, which surfaced on August 18 and 19, carries Cyberleek branding and includes a pitch for a Solana memecoin. According to the campaign's website, the releases are a protest against digital preorders, paid content, and games becoming unplayable after servers close.

Who is Cyberleek?

The Cyberleek campaign operates a website and has been promoted by at least two X profiles, MrCyberLeek and cyberleek_ar_io. The campaign's true identity and motives are unclear, with some speculating that it may be a group or individual seeking to capitalize on the GTA 6 hype. The campaign's website lays out a set of rules, known as the CYBERLEEK Edict, which opposes digital preorders, the resale of single-player content, and demands an offline fallback for single-player content when servers close.

Cyberleek's grievances against Rockstar

The Cyberleek campaign has specifically targeted Rockstar, the developer of GTA 6, with its grievances. The campaign argues that digital preorders are unfair, as they allow publishers to collect money before a game's release without providing a tangible product. The campaign also objects to the resale of single-player content, although it is unclear whether Rockstar's paid extras meet this definition. Additionally, the campaign demands that publishers provide an offline fallback for single-player content when servers close, citing the example of Ubisoft's The Crew, which became inaccessible after its servers were shut down.

Legitimacy and controversy

The legitimacy of the Cyberleek campaign has been disputed, with some questioning the authenticity of the leaked material and the true motives of the campaign. VideoTech has warned that the social media accounts claiming to represent Cyberleek may be fake, and GameRoll has concluded that one of the accounts is likely fake and not the real GTA 6 leaker. The campaign's promotion of a memecoin, $CYBERLEEK, has also raised eyebrows, with some accusing the campaign of using the GTA 6 leaks to advertise the token.

Memecoin controversy

The $CYBERLEEK memecoin has been traded on the Solana blockchain, with around $11.8 million worth of the token traded on August 18 alone. The campaign claims that money raised through the token will fund a secret project and protect the campaign from corporate counterattacks, but the details of the project and the use of the funds are unclear. The timing of the token's release, which coincided with the GTA 6 leaks, has led to accusations that the campaign is using the leaks to promote the token. Stop Killing Games has criticized the campaign, saying that the leaks are being used to advertise the memecoin, and that this is not helpful to the gaming community.
