Riot Games and TJ Sports have created a new global tournament for Tier 2 League of Legends teams. The World Star Challengers Invitational 2026 will run from September 20 to October 2, bringing together 16 squads from Asia, Europe, and the Americas for the first time.
According to the announcement reported by Dot Esports, the event is designed to give rising stars international experience. Riot Games stated that the exposure to different playstyles and competitive pressure could be as valuable as the tournament results for player development.
Tournament Format and Qualification
Five regions will send teams to the event. Each region-China, Korea, APAC, the Americas, and EMEA-will qualify three teams through their own paths. Those 15 teams will be joined by the reigning Asia Masters champion to complete the 16-team field.
The teams will be divided into three seeding pools. Specific rules are in place to ensure competitive balance. Teams from Pools 1 and 2 from the same region cannot be drawn into the same group, and no single group can contain more than two teams from any region.
Group Stage and Championship Bracket
The competition begins with a group stage from September 20 to 25. Four groups of four teams will play a double round-robin format, with every match being a best-of-one. A total of 48 matches are scheduled across six match days.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the championship bracket. This single-elimination stage runs from September 27 to October 2. All series in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be best-of-five. The WSCI 2026 Final is set for October 2.
| Stage | Dates | Format | Series/Match Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group Stage | Sept 20-25 | 4 groups of 4, double round-robin | Best-of-one |
| Championship Bracket | Sept 27 - Oct 2 | Single-elimination | Best-of-five |
Significance for the Tier 2 Ecosystem
Riot Games highlighted the Tier 2 scene as a important pipeline for the future of professional League of Legends. It serves as a development ground for emerging players and a bridge between amateur and top-tier professional play. The developer believes international competition will accelerate this development by exposing players to unfamiliar strategies and high-pressure environments they would not encounter in their home regions.
For broadcasting, Riot will use existing regional Tier 2 social channels and partner with regional co-streamers to deliver coverage globally. The company partnered with TJ Sports, use an existing framework to expand the Asia Masters concept into this global event.
Riot and TJ Sports have labeled the 2026 event a pilot. Its execution will help the organizers determine the long-term vision for international Tier 2 competition and how it can best support the players and teams aiming for the world stage.
