Dplus KIA upsets G2 Esports in Worlds 2026 Swiss opener
Dplus KIA defeated top-seeded G2 Esports 1-0 in the opening round of the Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage, avenging a prior loss and improving to a 1-0 record.

Dplus KIA beat G2 Esports in their Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage opener, a 1-0 victory that ended G2's three-match winning streak. The match, a rematch of a July win for Dplus KIA, began at 21:10 UTC on Friday 23 October at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas. The 29th-ranked Dplus KIA squad improved to 1-0 in the Swiss stage, while the 13th-ranked G2 Esports dropped to 0-1.
G2 seized early momentum. They caught ShowMaker's Syndra in mid and took down Dplus KIA's bot duo in a 4v4 fight, racing to a seven-to-zero lead in kills. By the 18-minute mark, G2 held a gold lead of around 3,000 to 4,000. They took control of macro play and secured the Rift Herald. Hans Sama's Kalista later killed Siwoo's Olaf, allowing G2 to claim a dragon. Despite this, Dplus KIA secured the first dragon of the game and later added a second.
Match progression and strategy
Dplus KIA's recovery was methodical. While G2 grouped mid, Dplus KIA farmed side lanes. Siwoo's side-lane play on Olaf helped extend the game. DK’s Ziggs executed a grouped push that resisted G2’s mid pressure, preventing tower sieges. G2's solo laners fell behind on resources as DK's Olaf and Syndra maintained lane presence. G2 pushed opponents out of mid, took vision control, and started attacking Baron, but could not close the game. DK claimed their first victory with a comeback win after 39 minutes.
Team standings and implications
The Swiss format prevents a rematch. No team can play the same opponent twice, so G2 and Dplus KIA cannot meet again in this stage. The Worlds 2026 Swiss Stage features 16 teams playing five rounds. Three wins send a team to the quarter-finals, while three losses mean elimination. In other Round 1 action, Karmine Corp beat Anyone’s Legend, Hanwha Life Esports beat Top Esports, and CTBC Flying Oyster defeated Team Liquid. Movistar KOI also scored an upset, defeating fourth-ranked Bilibili Gaming.
Context and upcoming schedule
G2 Esports entered as LEC Summer 2026 champions, having won the Grand Final on 20 September in Nice. Dplus KIA's form was built on their Esports World Cup win in Paris from 15 to 19 July, where they swept Karmine Corp 3-0 in the final. Organizers said it was "the club’s first Esports World Cup title," earning the team US$600,000 and 1,000 Club Championship points. Their last domestic match was a 1-3 loss to T1, who also won their Worlds opener by beating LOS. Matches from 28 to 30 October are scheduled to start at 8:00pm UTC. Dplus KIA's next Swiss Stage match is scheduled for 28 October 2026 at 8:00pm UTC.
