The Esports Foundation has introduced two new partner-operated qualification routes for the Esports World Cup 2027. These pathways, named EWC Direct Qualifiers and Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers, are designed to connect established competitions and local esports communities to the global tournament's qualification system, known as the Road to EWC. This structure brings together publisher-led leagues, international tournaments, and regional qualifiers. The new program aims to draw more events into that framework while allowing partners to retain their own identity and commercial opportunities.

The qualification pathway targets 1.8 million players across more than 400 events in 2027. The Esports World Cup itself is an annual international tournament series run by the Saudi Arabian nonprofit Esports Foundation. It uses a cross-game club format and featured a record $75 million prize pool in 2026. After being hosted in Paris this year, the tournament will return to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2027.

Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers Explained

Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers target grassroots communities. Local tournament organisers, federations, associations, cyber cafés, universities, esports venues, and gaming festivals can apply to run these events. Winners of a Satellite LCQ earn a place in the relevant game's main EWC Last Chance Qualifier the following summer, where they compete for a spot in the World Cup main event.

The initial Satellite LCQ lineup covers four titles, with more to be added later. The Esports Foundation will cover accommodation and visa costs for SLCQ winners attending the subsequent Last Chance Qualifier.

Game Title
Chess
Counter-Strike 2
FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves
Street Fighter 6

Direct Qualifiers Preserve Event Identity

EWC Direct Qualifiers allow existing competitions to keep their event identity and local commercial opportunities while providing players with an official qualification pathway. This extends the existing link between established esports tournaments and the Road to EWC. Organisers will operate and fund their events under their own brand.

The Esports Foundation stated: "The EWC 2027 Qualifier Program connects established competitions and local events with the global tournament's qualification system." Faisal Bin Homran, Chief Product Officer at the Esports Foundation, added that bringing more tournaments and communities into Road to EWC creates more opportunities for players to compete in their own communities.

Key Dates and Eligibility

Applications for both the Direct Qualifiers and Satellite LCQ programme are open now. They close on 20 December 2026. Any approved event must finish by June 1, 2027. Both routes must meet publisher requirements and EWC competitive standards covering tournament rules, anti-cheat measures, officiating, and verification of results.

The Foundation will announce Direct Qualifier partners, participating tournaments, and the number of qualification places available in each game as preparations progress. The initiative follows past successes like João "jafonsogv" Vasconcelos, who won the EA SPORTS FC tournament at EWC 2024 after advancing through a Last Chance Qualifier. Readers can expect further announcements on partners and tournaments in the lead-up to the 2027 event.
