Rockstar Games has released a 26-minute gameplay special for Grand Theft Auto VI titled 'An Extended Look,' which aired on Netflix and is also available on YouTube. The presentation, captured on PS5, revealed new details about the story, map, and gameplay systems ahead of the game's launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Story and Mission Design

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, stated that his most recent playthrough of the GTA 6 campaign took around 80 hours. The story is built in chapters, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, and Rockstar aims to blur the line between story missions and open-world activities to encourage exploration of the state of Leonida. Player choices will have consequences, with small decisions stacking up and larger ones potentially reshaping the narrative. Missions will offer built-in flexibility, providing multiple options or perspectives for completing heists and story sequences.

Protagonists and Relationship

The game focuses on the dynamic between its two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Players can switch between them freely while exploring the map, and they can call, text, or request to meet each other. If left alone, the characters will follow their own routines, but ignoring them can strain their relationship. Romance between Jason and Lucia is optional and develops based on how players choose to spend time, such as shopping, working out, or committing crimes together. Rockstar has clarified that a stronger relationship does not grant gameplay bonuses.

Map and World Details

While Rockstar has not provided an official map size, the full GTA 6 map is estimated to be roughly triple the size of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map. Vice City itself is said to be about twice as large as Los Santos from GTA 5. Each district will have a distinct look and population, and the pause-menu map uses satellite-style imagery. The world features over 600,000 individual NPC animations, a significant increase from the roughly 55,000 in GTA 5, aiding in ambient encounters and a living world feel.

Gameplay Systems and Criticisms

The wanted system has been expanded back to a six-star level after GTA 5's five-star cap. Police are now smarter, reacting to information like the player's face, clothes, and vehicle during chases. However, the reveal faced some criticism from players. The UI and minimap, inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2, along with some animations, were points of contention. Reports claim the base PS5 version is currently locked at 30 frames per second, with no clarity on PS5 Pro performance, and the first-person view option from GTA 5 reportedly will not be available at launch. Jason's perceived lack of personality has also been discussed, though judgments are based on limited footage. Despite these points, the community reaction to the extended look has been largely positive.
